Tech Giants Lend a Helping Hand

4/2/2020

We’ve all seen the headlines about Congress approving a multi-phase emergency stimulus to help businesses harmed by COVID-19.  But what about private companies, institutions and non-profits?  What type of business funding assistance is being offered by big companies and organizations to further assist in our rebound?

Facebook and Google are giants of Silicon Valley and are stepping up to provide other with resiliency grants, loans, and ad credits during these trying times. Below is a brief summary of their programs. Check back with this post for updates in the coming weeks about how these and other programs are developing!

Facebook has made available $100 million in grants for small businesses and is at the beginning of its process for accepting these grants. Facebook’s offering cash grants as well as ad credits on Facebook, which can be a critical highway to drive viewers from Facebook to your website or online store. Facebook has not released the complete details of their grant program but keep checking back and we will also post an update when more details become available! Check out their website for information on the grants as well as other resources and tips the tech-giant is offering.

Below is an excerpt from Sundar Pichai’s open letter regarding Google’s planned giving during this crisis. Similarly to Facebook, they are splitting their giving between grants, funding Community Development Finance Institutions, as well as a Google Ad credit program. Google is also at the beginning of their process and is setting up the infrastructure to doll out these funds. Their small business website can be referred to for updates in the coming weeks: Google CEO Letter

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen around the world, it’s taking a devastating toll on lives and communities. To help address some of these challenges, today we’re announcing a new $800+ million commitment to support small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), health organizations and governments, and health workers on the frontline of this global pandemic.
  • A $200 million investment fund that will support NGOs and financial institutions around the world to help provide small businesses with access to capital. As one example, we’re working with the Opportunity Finance Network in the U.S. to help fill gaps in financing for people and communities underserved by mainstream financial institutions. This is in addition to the $15 million in cash grants Google.org is already providing to nonprofits to help bridge these gaps for SMBs.
  • $340 million in Google Ads credits available to all SMBs with active accounts over the past year. Credit notifications will appear in their Google Ads accounts and can be used at any point until the end of 2020 across our advertising platforms. We hope it will help to alleviate some of the cost of staying in touch with their customers
